The iPhones and iPod Touches of the world have come a long way from their first editions. These devices are now fully capable of playing music, and even creating original symphonies that might’ve been impossible to create on mobile devices in years past.
People have managed to cover Coldplay songs and emulate recent hits such as Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” using only their iPhones and iPod Touches! The former in particular is quite remarkable considering that Coldplay songs have very subtle beats and riffs in their songs.
This is a veritable revolution in the music industry. So let us look at a few music apps that are available on the iTunes app store that allow you to create music with your iDevices.
- Touch Xylophone
The xylophone is probably one of the most universally recognizable musical instruments. Everyone has either seen or heard one at some point in their lives. Even though it may be named differently around the world, most people have seen it at some point in their lives.
The Touch Xylophone app converts your screen into a xylophone with bars covering the screen. Instead of hitting them with a stick like in the real-life version, you just need to touch them to produce the required sound.
The anklung is a traditional Indonesian musical instrument. It needs to be shaken to produce a sound, and each instrument plays only one note. Needless to say, to create a symphony or a proper song you need a bunch of angklungs played together.
Like the real thing, the anklung app requires your phone to be shaken in order to create its sound and can only play one note at a time. However, the app allows you to set your instrument to any note you want it to play.
- Touch Piano
There are lots of piano apps on the iTunes store, but Touch Piano is one of the better ones because it is extremely simple. While it simulates the sound of a piano perfectly, the keys are slender and you might have some trouble playing them if you have sausage fingers.
- Guitar Applications
Much like the piano, the iTunes store is full of guitar apps. And all of them offer their own unique feature set, so you might have to search for one that you are comfortable with. Instant Guitar Solo Lite is an interesting app that allows you to play some mean licks at the press of a button. The Guitar Free app emulates the acoustic guitar and the Steel Guitar app allows you to play a guitar with more than the traditional 6 strings.
- Music Creators – RJDJ
This is an unusual application to say the least. It doesn’t emulate any traditional musical instruments. Instead, you are given virtual ‘scenes’ which are environments where you are allowed to create your own music using either your voice, the movement of the iDevice or the touch interface itself. This is a difficult app to describe unless you see it for yourself. It also features a tutorial to get first-time users started.
- Drum Meister Pro Lite
This is a fantastic free drum simulator application. The app converts your screen into a drum kit with cymbals and tapping on the drums gives you the traditional drum sound. Interestingly, tapping different parts of the cymbals will give you a different output, just like it would in real life. You can even rearrange your drum set, and record your attempts at becoming Lars Ulrich.
- Music Creators – Beatwave
Beatwave is another interesting app which allows you to put notes into a “music field”. The application features a scanner which will then traverse the music field and play any notes it comes across. You can control the sound and tempo of your notes, and create up to 4 music fields.
This is another interesting app that is hard to describe unless you see it in action. It is great fun to play around with, and you might even end up creating some great electronic music.
Other than these, the iTunes store also features other helpful utilities such as guitar tuners and metronome simulators. There are tons of great developers creating music apps and more are added to the app store almost daily. Look around till you find your application of choice, and strum away!
