Having a slow Internet connection can be a frustrating thing. Luckily there are a number of different things that can be checked to speed up the connection when online. Most of these things can easily be done by anyone at home and can be accomplished before having a technician come out and look at the system.
The first consideration would be to see what speed should be provided by the Internet Company. This information can usually be found on a billing statement or by contacting their customer support. If the connection speed of the computer is not at or above this promised speed, then further investigation needs to be done.
How to speed up a slow internet connection
Doing an initial speed test on the computer will show exactly what is being sent and received and will give the user an idea of how slow it is. There are a number of free programs on the Internet that will test the computer and enable you to run an Internet speed test.
There are number of different steps that can be taken to clean up the computer and improve the overall speed and performance. This would include running a disk defragmenter. This will organize the computer filing system and if it has not been done in quite a while it will greatly improve things. Also any of the unnecessary or unused files should be removed as they simply take up space. A virus scan should be done and all of the virus information should be up to date. Finally, it should be checked to see if there are multiple firewalls installed on the computer. One is all that is needed, so any additional ones should be removed.
If doing these few items does not improve the speed of the computer, it may be necessary to upgrade the entire system. If the computer is more than a few years old, it may not have the memory or power to be able to appropriately run various programs and the Internet.
The Internet browser is something that can affect speed as well. The newest and most up to date version of the Internet browser should be used. Google Chrome is a popular browser due to the fact that it is much faster than other browsers on the market.
One simple suggestion would be to reset and unplug and restart the home network. Simply unplugging the modem and wireless router will often solve any speed issues.
The modem itself may need to be replaced. If this is the original modem that was provided to the homeowner by the Internet Company, it may not be providing the same level of power it had at one point. Purchasing an aftermarket modem may help.
As with programs on the computer, the firmware of the router may need to be updated. Having the most up to date firmware will ensure that that it is running properly. There is usually a web based program that will give the user access to their router. This information is usually included in the instructions or there may be a web address directly on the router.
If using a wireless network, it should be secured with a unique password. If it is an unsecured network, others in the area could be utilizing the wireless and taking up valuable bandwidth.
With some simple steps, it is quite easy to check and improve a slow Internet connection.

Having fast websites is also a good solution to me. Plus, it’s good for the environment ! Indeed, less time to load the page, less time spent on the website, less electricity used !

This post is really hitting close to home for me at the moment. My household has been experiencing increasingly slower and slower from our almighty ISP: Comcast. Unfortunately they have infamously poor customer service, and often a call to their tech support line with a simple “our speeds are weirdly slow for no reason” will get them to make an adjustment and increase our dwindling bandwidth.
It’s also funny how a simple unplug-and-replug can solve most issues, and people don’t realize it!

There were times I experienced slow Internet connection and it really makes me frustrated. There are lots of things I need to do and to accomplish. And I usually ask my brother who is a computer technician to assist me but it took for weeks since I have to contact him to come over at our house. But then, I’m glad that I found this blog and now I have ideas in how will I check my connection speed. Thanks a lot. Now I what to do first.

I do not understand why there are some internet provider that do not give the exact service to their customers. Like our internet service. We were subscribe to 1mbps, but when I run the test, it is only 0.75mbps. That is not right. I already contacted the provider. They took necessary actions but the result is still the same. But good thing that you post this article. It is a little relieve to me.
You can also tweak a little bit of your registry to get a fast internet connection.I have tried it and it works but consider using a software for this and do not change anything manually.

These are really good advices for those lucky ones that don’t have dial-up, like i have. My speed is low and limited on 25kbs, i can’t get past it with better browsers or a better computer.
So when you guys curse your internet speed, just think there are some people out there that have an even slower one.

In Canada I strongly recommend the ISP Teksavvy Solutions. Their cable packages are great value and have large bandwidth caps. Stay away from Bell and Rogers for internet.
