Being able to stay connected to the internet and your email has become an everyday essential for most of us. And, thanks to mobile broadband technology, it’s now easier and cheaper than ever with a whole range of products and services available to the consumer.
This is largely down to the huge range of smartphones now on the market and also the advent of the tablet device, which is currently dominated by the Apple iPad. When it comes to getting connected to the mobile internet, you’re certainly not short of options, and by being just a little bit canny it’s also possible to do it all on a fairly low budget.
Getting started
Using a mobile broadband comparison website such as Broadband Genie is an excellent place to start, because you can get an instant overview of what’s available and it wonít cost you a penny either. Better still, it’s possible to arrange the search criteria to meet your individual needs.
Going down the smartphone route can be a great way to enjoy all the frills of modern technology, and most models now carry an array of features including 3G mobile internet access, Wi-Fi capability plus Bluetooth as well as a camera, keyboard, apps and a host of other accessories that make the smartphone a pocket-sized computing powerhouse.
Get a good deal
Do your homework using the comparison site and you’ll find there are plenty of deals around for smartphone customers, and these are available in either pay-as-you-go or contract options. The contract route will often get you a smartphone for free, while pay-as-you-go generally means you have to pay for the handset.
A contract deal might offer a more flexible package however, although the advantage of PAYG is that you only pay for the time you are connected to the internet and there is no contract to sign. Heavier internet users who also make lots of calls and texts are probably better off going for the contract packages, as they’ll generally mean you get more for your money.[ad#r]
Other options
The Apple iPad, meanwhile, is a great looking gadget though quite pricey to buy. If you can, spend a little extra and get the 3G mobile internet-enabled version, which also comes with Wi-Fi. Again, getting connected couldnít be easier because once you’ve got the device you’ll need to go shopping for iPad SIM cards. These are like micro versions of a mobile phone one, but smaller, so they only fit the iPad.
Finding deals on these won’t take that long because there aren’t currently all that many options available. Lookout for the pay as you go iPad SIMs as these offer you the same kind of no-contract flexibility delivered to PAYG smartphones. Alternatively, you can plump for a contract option as these begin with one-month rolling options and, again, generally offer rather more sizeable data options.
